Welcome to day two of our compost appreciation week! Today we will learn ways to use compost for gardening purposes. Compost helps soil naturally fend off weeds and pests without having to use potentially harmful chemicals. To make this happen, spread 3-4 inches of compost over the new beds, use a spade to combine the top 8-12 inches and then rake over the area. Compost can also be used in homemade tree/shrub and flower/veggie potting soil.

Tree/Shrub Potting Soil:
3 gallons compost
2.5 gallons coarse sand
3 gallons peat moss
2.5 gallons composted pine bark
3 gallons perlite
2 Tbsp lime
1 cup granular organic fertilizer

Flower/veggie potting soil:
6 gallons compost
6 gallons peat moss
4.5 gallons perlite
¼ cup lime
½ cup granular organic fertilizer
